The past few years, we’ve worked with a variety of kayak groups and other waterfront activists (Long Island City Community Boathouse, NYC Water Trail Association, Urban Swim and Lower East Side Ecology Center, to name a few) to launch a kayak program at Stuyvesant Cove. The program has been such a big success that next year, the city will be installing a special dock to use in an ongoing kayak program.
Want to be part of the fun?
You can join the Stuy Cove Kayaking Club and become a volunteer to help run the program (you can email stuycovekayaking[at]gmail[dot]com for more information and future volunteer orientation opportunities).
Here’s the kayaking schedule for summer 2015 in the Cove. Times are scheduled to coincide with low tide. The last kayaks go out half an hour before the end of the event:
Sunday June 28: 11:30am-2:30pm
Sunday July 12: 11:30am-2:30pm
Sunday August 16: 3:00-6:00pm
Saturday August 29: 1:30-4:30pm
Saturday September 12: 1-4pm
You can also sign up to help bring the kayaks across the river from Anable Basin and/or back at the end of the day.
Participants need to be able to swim (life vests and equipment will be provided) and children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. There are a number of liability waivers that need to be signed, so come a little early. Summer is the best time to get out on the river!
Special thanks to Assemblymember Brian Kavanagh and Councilmember Dan Garodnick for co-sponsoring this program and giving it their full support!
