On Monday morning, a delegation of seven officials from China toured the Solar One Workforce Training Center and held a meeting afterwards to learn about how Solar One develops and manages its educational programs. The officials, from both government and NGO organizations in China, were extra excited to see the training center, where Solar One holds it’s workforce development classes.
The exchange was mediated by professional translators, who utilized a live-translation earpiece system, whereby each person wore an earpiece and could hear the translations on-the-fly.

During these summer months, Solar One and Asian Americans for Equality (AAFE) have worked together to deliver Green Building Operations and Maintenance training to superintendents in lower Manhattan. The trainings focus on improving building health, safety, and comfort, while reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions.
Building superintendents and maintenance workers don’t always get a lot of attention, but they are critical to making our buildings sustainable. They are the ones who have the most day-to-day impact on how a building operates and how successful it can become in reducing its energy usage .
The five day course and curriculum run by Solar One and AAFE was structured in line with the requirements for Building Performance Institute’s (BPI) Multi-Family Building Operator Certification. The training consisted of two portions; one section in English and the other in Mandarin/Cantonese. The students, building superintendents and maintenance staff, now have the potential to improve the quality of life for their tenants and to help play a vital role in reducing energy costs.
If you work, manage, or own a building and are interested in a similar training to reduce energy consumption and improve quality of life for your tenants please contact Josh Vedder at Josh[at]solar1[dot]org or 646-576-5661
Solar One’s training lab is going to continue offering Urban Green’s GPRO Operations and Maintenance Essentials course and certificate into the fall. Classes will be held on September 30st and October 1st, with the certificate exam on October 2nd. Solar One can also provide private GPRO training for groups at your office.
Whether you are a superintendent, building maintainer, or property or facility manager, GPRO will help you make informed decisions about how to operate your buildings efficiently and safely. Going green not only results in energy savings, but will also reduce your heating and electricity costs, make tenant living and working environments healthier, and reduce the impact on the environment.

Once upon a time, after students had completed Solar One’s workforce training courses, we had to partner with a different organization to administer the Building Performance Institute exams so that our students could receive their certification. But no more!
Solar One’s entire green workforce staff now has both the technical certificates and proctoring certificates to be able to administer the BPI exams to our students without leaving the building. Exams have to be video-recorded for quality control, and strict requirements must be followed. The exam includes both a written test and a “field” exam, where students demonstrate their skills, and Solar One is equipped to administer both parts of the exam.
Also, our instructors have developed their own Multi Family Exam which was approved by the Building Performance Institute (BPI). Created by our instructors, this exam was made to measure what our students learned and learned to apply to their field. Stay updated for what our students can achieve with their expanded certifications!

Meet another three of our workforce students! The below students come from very different backgrounds, yet they all benefited from the program.
