Staten Island HS Students Firing Up for National Solar-Car Competition

car-1Tottenville High School’s Green Technology Club refines their car design of their award-winning racer for the National Solar-Car Competition. The Green Technology students  have built a solar-powered car bound for national competition for three consecutive years.

They hope to create a new state-of-the-art Solar power car which will enter  the U.S. Solar Car Challenge this July. Last year the students took 2nd place and were honored by Mayor Bloomberg for exclusively representing the New York. On Saturday April 13th, from 10am to 2pm, the students will have an open house to show the new Carbon Fiber car to the public.

Green Design Lab Energy Challenge

The Green Design Lab Energy Challenge is back with a record-breaking 55 schools all completing to cut down their electricity consumption!

The energy challenge is a contest that runs from December to March between participating schools. The schools’ electricity use is recorded each month and compared to the electrical usage for the same month from previous years. The schools that have the highest electricity reduction will be the winners!

Recovery Continues With Some Generous New Support

daisy_frontloaderWe are continuing to put back together our Park and Solar1 Building, and we recently received new generous support to help make that happen. Special thanks to the Stuyvesant Cove Park Association, the Ward Family Foundation, and the FJC Foundation.

With continued excellent volunteer support, steady visible progress has been made.

50 Teachers Join S1’s Professional Development Day

On November 6th, 2012 the Solar One Education team delivered a PD training on the Green Design Lab curriculum that was free and open to all NYC educators. Election day is a designated PD day, or professional development day for all NYC public school teachers.

Hurricane Sandy tore through the region the prior week, damaging much of our education supplies and disrupting transportation. We considered postponing our Professional Development day and we were worried that teachers might not be able to come.

Join Solar One as we watch the town-hall presidential debate on the East River! Bundle up (it will be outside) and watch the candidates on our outdoor screen while drinking (spiked, if you like) tea, eating lentil soup, and having a grand ole’ time!

Intro to Green for Coops and Condos: Oct. 24 at 7PM

I2G_blogHow can smart co-ops and condos turn pressure to “go green” into an opportunity to cut costs and comply with new codes?

This two-hour workshop, sponsored by the Council of New York Cooperatives and Condominiums (CNYC) and Solar One, an independent contractor to NYSERDA, will present cost-effective ways to reduce energy expenses and have a healthier, greener building; details on the NYSERDA Multifamily Performance Program for energy efficiency retrofits and financing; an overview of new green laws and code changes; the conversion from No. 6 to No. 2 heating oil; and strategies for engaging owners in the greening process. Pre-registration is required due to limited space.
