Solar One’s Green Workforce Training Program provides hard skill technical training and environmental literacy education tied to the high growth areas of energy efficiency, renewable energy, green building operations and maintenance, and green infrastructure construction. In 2011, we reached 695 people with Green Workforce Training.
WHY GREEN JOBS?
New York City is an international leader in advancing the green industry sector though aggressive programs to curb carbon emissions and energy use, and the New York City metropolitan region has significant potential for job growth in the energy efficiency, renewable energy and green building maintenance and operations sectors. City policies like Greater Greener Building Law, Green Jobs Green New York, on-bill finance, NYSERDA and Con Edison incentive programs coupled with rising energy costs are driving labor market growth in New York City in both the near and long term.
OUR STUDENTS
Solar One trains solely workforce organization program participants, reaching over 1,000 individuals in the past two years. Trainees include chronically unemployed and underemployed individuals that reside in environmental justice areas across New York
City, and participate in workforce training programs that serve the formerly incarcerated and/or addicted, disconnected youth, veterans, the homeless, and residents of public housing. Approximately 20% are aged 18-24, and the rest over age 25.
