Energy Connections connects New York City residents, businesses, and community based organizations to energy efficiency and renewable energy resources through education, outreach, and project partnerships. Our mission is to make all New Yorkers part of our city’s ambitious efforts to combat climate change and develop a clean, green economy.
Since its founding in 2008, Energy Connections has been helping New Yorkers take an active role in our city’s ambitious efforts to combat climate change, reduce its carbon footprint, and develop a clean, green economy. The Energy Connections program fosters energy efficiency in buildings through a range of of initiatives which educate the public about sustainability practices from solar power to green roofs.
Buildings are a critical component to making New York a greener city. It costs New Yorkers $15 billion per year to heat and power their buildings. Buildings in New York City account for 95% of electricity use, more than 80% of the city’s greenhouse gas emissions, and 85% of the city’s water consumption. In addition, 80% of existing NYC buildings will still be in use in 2030, which is why improving energy efficiency systems right now in these buildings is essential to making NYC greener.
Energy Connections helps New Yorkers find ways to be a part of making NYC greener and take part in city-wide sustainability initiatives through Mayor Bloomberg’s PlaNYC. Energy Connections’ initiatives help residents, businesses, and community-based organizations use less energy and save money through an expansive program of workshops, training, conferences and panels, and community outreach. These initiatives are:
- Serving as the NYSERDA Energy $mart Communities Coordinator for Manhattan and Staten Island);
- Founding the Clean Energy Connections series;
- Implementing the Whole Buildings workshop series, which provides on-site workshops and energy efficiency assessments of low-income buildings, with a goal of helping residents and building owners lower energy costs by reducing energy use.
Combined, Energy Connections reaches thousands of building residents, superintendents, building operators, condo and co-op board members, and building owners annually.
