We hope you and your friends and colleagues will help us celebrate the bounty of the Fall Equinox and honor two stewards of the environment. Together — we can make it possible to break ground for Solar 2 and leave it as our legacy to our children and future generations.

Solar2_2013-08-20Solar 2 is one of 127 initiatives in PlaNYC, Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s unprecedented and comprehensive sustainability program. Net proceeds from the evening will fund Solar 2, the first fully resilient, energy positive building in Manhattan — and a global arts, entertainment and educational destination — that will be constructed in compliance with new government regulations in response to Superstorm Sandy’s devastation.

About Solar One: Established in 2004, Solar One has become a well-known environmental think tank, with programs radically transforming New York City’s sustainability landscape. Solar One is dedicated to setting new standards to make urban environments more sustainable; to educate the public about solutions to our environmental challenges; to connect people from all walks of life to the latest resources for energy efficiency and renewable power; and to do all of that in an engaging, intellectually honest and entertaining way that leaves people inspired and facilitates community-wide change.

Solar 2 — which will rise on the East River in Stuyvesant Cove at 23rd Street and replace the existing Solar One building — will be the first energy positive building in New York City. As a national beacon for solar power, it will also become a global destination for visitors to New York City. Its purpose is to catalyze a major shift in the way NYC generates and consumes energy through hands-on education and live demonstration of energy independence and environmental sustainability. Each element of Solar 2 is designed to support and regenerate the system, and every element will serve as an educational opportunity for others. It will deliver a unique blend of youth education, informative forums and world-class exhibit space as well as interactive learning opportunities on topics such as recycling, energy conservation in apartment living and estuary systems of the East River.
