Events at Solar One

Solar One utilizes its solar panel array to host the first and only Green Energy Arts Festival in New York City.
Solar One has spent several years developing a unique Green Energy Arts program as a way to boost the visibility of Solar One and bring more people to the site. This program has reached thousands of New Yorkers including many who might not normally attend an “environmental” event. Backed by the idea that a person watching a performance or listening to a concert is more receptive to new or unique ideas, the Green Energy Arts Festival makes environmental conservation an experience rather than just an abstract concept.

The Green Energy Arts Festival was held for the first time in 2005, and repeated in 2006 and 2007. In 2007, the Festival kicked off with the Solar-Powered Dance Series, featuring two weekend programs of performances created by twelve emerging choreographers chosen from dozens of submissions. This provided an excellent chance for these artists to have a venue for their work and an audience of several hundred people. In August, the Solar-Powered Film Series showed free classic films alongside the river on 6 different summer nights. True to the name, the audio portion of every program was powered by the energy collected on the roof at Solar One. Interspersed throughout these events and the rest of the year were numerous other performances ranging from the Chinese opera adaptations of Chinese Theater Works to our Sun To Stars South Asian Festival to numerous instructional dance lessons put on by the Stuyvesant Cove Park Association.
