About
The Green Design Lab is a project-based school greening initiative. The goal is simple, to provide students with ways to “green” their school and community in ways that go beyond recycling. Using the City of New York is our lab, and experience as our tool, the green design lab is an interactive way of looking at the spaces and places we occupy as inspiration for critical thinking about the built and natural environment and everything in between.

Pilot Project: Manhattan Comprehensive Night and Day School (link)
Summary:
The objective of this project was to provide students with an introduction to key concepts in sustainable design and technology through hands on design/build experiments, activities and field trips. The school greening strategy was approached by looking at the school building itself as the model for an ecological system. Through this project, students made recommendations for how to green their school infrastructure physically and the community around it.
Core Thematics:
Design Skills
Students learned how designers, architects and planners work to build the spaces we use everyday and also how to consider resources, materials and the environment in the process.
Field Study + Experience
New York City will provided us with opportunities to visit and explore examples, places and people that can demonstrate good architecture and “green” design.
Create Something Meaningful
The Manhattan Comprehensive building became our primary focal point for applying green design. Each student helped create a physical model of their school that integrates green design into the building.
