This past Saturday, Solar 1 played host to a variety of slimy, scaly, and even segmented animal guests for Creatures Family Day. Our friend Gabby from The Art Farm in the City brought over a dozen reptiles, amphibians, and insects for some up-close critter introductions and hands-on learning. We enjoyed the company of turtles, tortoises, bullfrogs, salamanders, and geckos over the course of the afternoon – even a Madagascar hissing cockroach made an appearance! Where many grown-ups hesitated, our youngest visitors were some of the most adventurous in greeting the exciting array of animals.
At our arts and crafts table, recycled cardboard was cut and colored into take-home masks and puppets of favored fauna. After a heat wave forced the cancellation of our last Eco-art Family Day, such beautiful weather was a golden opportunity to give the creature theme a creative extension.
Special thanks to the Stuyvesant Cove Park Association for making the creatures’ visit possible. And please come back for our final Family Day of the season- Go Fish!, catch-and-release fishing in the East River with the Lower East Side Ecology Center.
