Stuyvesant Cove Park Summer Series Is Back

This year’s Summer Concert Series is back and in full swing! Here’s what you can expect in the month of July. These events are free and suitable for all ages, so come down to the Cove and enjoy!

The John Colianni Quintet, pictured,opened the season on June 20th but will be returning to the Cove on July 9th at 3pm.

The Summer Concert series is presented by the Stuyvesant Cove Park Association, and hosted by Solar One.

Committed to the Dream: Jenri Gonzalez Solo Painting Show at S1 Workforce Training Lab

jenrigonazalexFor the first time ever, Solar One is pleased to invite the public to our workforce training lab in Long Island City on Saturday July 25 at 1pm for a very special art exhibition.

Fresh off the heels of his latest solo show, New York artist Jenri Gonzalez breaks into once again brightens the Long Island City art scene with 40 of his latest paintings in a spirited show called “Committed to the dream….” Continuing with the themes of astral projection, flight, love, acceptance, dreams, disappointments, pain and change , Jenri shows us his soul effortlessly with each canvas in the show.

The Stuyvesant Cove Park Association Music Series Returns to Solar One

scpamusicSummer is only five days away, and with summer comes the Stuyvesant Cove Park Association Music Series. This free series, suitable for all ages, will showcase local performers in a variety of styles throughout the rest of June and the whole of July.

Click through for the schedule. The first concert will feature Jason Green & the Labor of Love, and will be held on Monday June 22 (rain date June 23) at 6:30pm at Solar 1, 23rd Street & the East River. David Hershey-Webb, pictured, will perform on July 20.

Rewilding Stuyvesant Cove Park on Saturday June 6 at 5pm

rewilding_blogRachel Frank will be presenting a performance based on rewilding, an environmental practice that seeks to reestablish the landscape’s former ecosystems and increase sustainability by reintroducing species to areas in which they had formerly thrived but have since gone extinct. In Frank’s performance, actors wearing American bison head masks will symbolically rewild Stuyvesant Cove against the backdrop of the East River and views of Brooklyn and Queens. Performing in Stuyvesant Cove, a park established on land that was once an abandoned industrial site, this performance is part of a larger project, which uses the concept of rewilding to explore how we think about the landscape around us—its past, present and sustainability into the future.

Elaine Summers, Legendary NYC Choreographer Who Loved Solar One, Passes Away at 89

elainesummersThe word “legendary” gets tossed around an awful lot these days, but it truly fits the life and work of choreographer Elaine Summers, who passed away at Bellevue hospital on December 27 after a fall at her home. She was 89.

THIS SUNDAY! Legendary Choreographer Elaine Summers Returns to Solar One with Skytime

Skytime 2014 / Moon Rainbow is an ongoing series of collaborative Intermedia artworks conceived in 1982 by choreographer, filmmaker, and Intermedia pioneer, Elaine Summers. The project explores the collaborative process with emphasis on the interrelationship between art and technology. Summers’ SKY works have seen many incarnations, varying from site-specific multi-disciplinary performance events, to a web-based concept artwork (skytime.org) – all of which are based on the sky as the origin and continuum of time in the human experience.
